Los Piedaos
If you live in Orgiva or Lanjarón, you might already know David and Shujata Dry who own and run the holiday cortijos at Los Piedaos. They are delightful company and always make time for a quick coffee when bumped into in town.
David is an architect whose eco-thoughtful designs incorporate the materials and vernacular of the region. He's a real Alpujarras veteran, who came to live here in 1989 ¨before the mountain roads had safety barriers¨ as he says.
Shujata, originally from Hertfordshire, met and married David and came to live with him five years ago. She has brought her wonderful sense of colour and fun to the interiors of the five cortijos that together make up Los Piedaos. I haven't stayed in any of the cortijos, but I have seen them; they radiate the same relaxed charm and welcome as their owners. Pour yourself a refreshing beverage and drop in for an online visit before you book your spring or summer vacation. You can also read about Los Piedaos in Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay Guide for Spain, and it's one of just six Spanish entries that made it into his prestigious new eco-guide, Green Places to Stay.
Incidentally, if you'd like to know more about David's rather fascinating past, or peep into the Dry's own home at Los Piedaos, I wrote an article
for an upmarket property mag in 2005, called
On Dry Land, for which Fred did the photography. Anyway, lovely people, lovely place - have a wander round.
